Less About, More Why

This blog, the Poverty Kitchen, is the result of decades of kitchen experience, and a steadfast refusal to write a dead tree book.
There are thousands of cookbooks.
Most of them are out of print.
We have chef friends who write/wrote cookbooks, they’re all excellent books filled with excellent recipes. No doubt some will make it to the recipes section of this website (attributed).

What they don’t do is get the reluctant cook, the novice cook, the intimidated cook past the fear, disappointment and indecision.
Our goal, is to help you to make good choices when shopping, to purchase with an eye towards cost-per-serving value, and help you learn the materials and processes necessary to create successful meals.
Obviously we have opinions.
Other people may have different opinions.

What we are not?
We’re not paid for content. We’re not paid to feature new products.
We’re not under a publishing deadline, not compelled to write something for this month’s issue.
We can’t put a knife, pot, pan, or cutting board in your hand and ask the most important questions: How does it feel? What can you afford? Do you like garlic?
How much garlic?
We can answer this: Can you leave the garlic out altogether?
Sure. It just won’t be “pasta with garlic and olive oil” so what would be your choice?
Pasta with butter and olive oil?
Pasta, butter, olive oil, and chopped parsley?
Pasta, butter, olive oil, chopped parsley and basil?
Do you want to add diced roasted peppers, maybe halved cherry tomatoes?
Sliced olives, or not?

The lesson in all of that: Give yourself permission to experiment.
